Long time company member and the Knightsbridge's own Master of Suspense Scott Dittman returns to direct a brilliant mystery in the vein of his previous mystery hits. The Mystery Plays by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa is written in the classic medieval mystery play style from Spain… with a Twilight Zone accent. You will be kept on the edge of your seat with this thrilling tale from the dark side. The Mystery Plays opens March 19th, 2010 at the Knightsbridge Theatre.
The Mystery Plays received the 2002 Roger L. Stevens Award from the Kennedy Center's Fund for New American Plays. The play is made up of two interrelated one acts, loosely based on the tradition of the medieval mystery plays. In The Filmmaker's Mystery the first play, we are introduced to Joe Manning, a director of horror films, who has survived a terrible train wreck - only to be haunted by the ghost of one of the passengers who did not survive. Mysteries unravel as Joe struggles to understand why he survived and what this ghost could possibly want. In the second play, Ghost Children, we meet Abby Gilley, who travels back to her small hometown to make peace with the man who brutally murdered her parents and younger sister; the man is her brother. Like the original medieval mystery plays, The Mystery Plays weaves the audience through two intricate tales exploring the mysteries of death, the afterlife, religion, faith and ultimately… forgiveness.
Having grown up reading horror comic books, it is no surprise where Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa's true talents lie. Aguirre-Sacasa, an accomplished, award-winning writer and one of The Los Angeles Times' recently named "Faces to Watch in 2010," studied playwriting at the Yale School of Drama, solidifying his reputation as a writer. Soon after graduating, Aguirre-Sacasa began writing for Marvel Comics, contributing to such series as Sensational Spider-Man, Night crawler, Marvel Knights 4, The Stand, Marvel Divas and winning the coveted Harvey Award for Angel: Revelations and The Dead of Night: Man-Thing. During his time with Marvel, he also somehow found time to become a published playwright whose work has been produced at the Manhattan Theatre Club, Second Stage and SCR. In 2009, he joined the writing staff of HBO's Big Love and developed a series about werewolves, Howl, for the Fox Network. Next up for Aguirre-Sacasa is a first attempt of a new spin on a Broadway musical. It's a Bird...It's a Plane...It's Superman! will premier June 2010 at the Dallas Theater Center with a brand new book by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa. This ingenious man of many talents is most definitely a "face to watch."
Director Scott Dittman is proud to be working on his eighth directorial effort with the Knightsbridge Theatre, and is overjoyed that it can be with a Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa piece. Having relocated to Los Angeles from Tampa, Florida, Dittman recently directed the Arts In Motion's successful production of Rogers & Hammerstein's Cinderella. His past success with the Knightsbridge includes Strangers on a Train, The Mousetrap, A Murder Has Been Arranged and Murder on the Orient Express. Mr. Dittman has assembled a talented cast to perform this intriguing work, including Knightsbridge members and critics' favorites Rene Guerrero, Marti Hale, Adam Dlugolecki and Katherine McCoy as well as two new performers to the Knightsbridge stage, Christopher Biewer, and Frederick Dechow. This show marks Dittman's tenth year with the Knightsbridge Theatre and the National American Shakespeare Company.
